Applications are now open for the 2018 edition of KPMG’s Best British Mobile Startup competition.

Successful applicants will be invited to pitch their business to a panel of industry experts at four regional events to be staged at Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester and London. The regional winners will be flown out to Barcelona to attend Mobile World Congress 2018 and pitch on stage at 4YFN for the chance to win the title of Best British Mobile Startup 2018.

The competition is an opportunity for British tech businesses to raise their profile and to gain access to investment opportunities, corporate connections and a booth to present their startup to MWC’s 100,000 attendees.

KPMG Presents: The Best British Mobile Startup 2017 – FAQs

Q: How can I participate in the competition?

A: To enter the competition, a company must fill out the online application form before the application deadline of 25 October 2017.

Q: Who can apply?

A: Any technology company with a dominant mobile element to it that is registered and based in the UK can apply. All entrants entering the competition on behalf of the technology company must be residents in the UK aged 18 years or over. KPMG employees and contractors are prohibited from entering the competition.

Q: When can I apply to participate in the competition?

A: Applications are open from 4 September 2017 and close on 25 October 2017. All applications must be received by no later than 4pm (GMT) on 25 October 2017.

Q: Which location should I apply to?

A: We kindly ask that you apply to the location that is closest to your office headquarters.

Q: Is there a limit to the number of entries?

A: During the application period, there is no limit to the number of companies that can apply, however we request no more than one application per company.

Q: How do I know if my company qualifies as a ‘mobile startup’ for the purpose of this competition?

A: We aim to be as inclusive as possible; if your company has a mobile element to it, we encourage you to apply.

Q: What stage should my company be at to be considered?

A: At the minimum your company must have a minimum viable product/service.

Q: What is the pitching format?

A: Each company will be given a total of eight minutes on stage, four minutes to pitch followed by four minutes for Q&A with the judging panel. All presentations must be in Microsoft PowerPoint file format.  However, no video, audio or live demonstrations are permitted.

Q: What are the judging criteria?

A: Each competition will be judged by a panel of industry experts. All applications will be scored under four categories with equal weighting to each. The categories are Pitch Quality, Innovation, Market Potential and Traction. The decisions of the panel will be final.

Q: How many startups will be selected to showcase at 4YFN at Mobile World Congress 2017?

A: Five regional event winners will be showcased at 4YFN at Mobile World Congress 2017.

Q: What are the costs involved in participation?

A: There is no charge for entering into the competition, although all costs relating to attending the UK-based events will be borne by the participants themselves.

Q: What are the competition prizes?

A: The winners of the regional events will be provided flights from the UK, accommodation in Barcelona during the conference and conference passes to attend MWC 2018 and 4YFN 2018, limited to one person per company. Competition finalists will also be given a booth at 4YFN to participate at the conference.

The winner of the overall competition will receive a trophy to celebrate the achievement. The prize cannot be substituted by an alternative, cash or otherwise.

Q: How and when will the winners be notified?

A: At each event, the winners will be notified on the day of the competition as part of a short award ceremony.

Q: How and when will the results be announced?

A: The results will be announced on the day of each event, and will be made publicly available at the end of the event series in a specific publication on www.kpmgtechgrowth.co.uk.

Q: Is there any publicity involved?

A: KPMG will be promoting the events alongside various partners throughout the course of the event series. By entering the competition, you agree that any personal information provided by you with the competition entry may be held and used by KPMG to administer the competition.

If you are a winner of the competition, you agree that KPMG may use your name and image and company branding to announce the winner of this competition and for any other reasonable and related promotional and marketing purposes.
